Python Regius Information
The Ball Python (Python Regius) or the Royal Python is species of nonvenomous snakes that belongs to the Family Pythonidae. Python Regius is native to Africa and is the smallest of Africa's Python species. Due to the small size and the temperament, the snake is possibly the most popular snake in the pet trade. Although there are no subspecies found, the morphology of this species is amazing. With over 3,600 different color mutations, along with new ones be produced every year! Why is the this species called Ball Python? Well when it is stressed or scared it will curl up in a ball and completely hide it's head. The other common name "Royal Python" is given to this species because the rulers in Africa would wear these pythons as jewelry!
Size-Many Ball Pythons do not grow over six feet. Females are usually bigger than males, With males growing around 3-4 feet and females growing to about 4-5 feet. The body is stocky, but the head will barely grow at all. Both sexes have little spurs on each side of the anal vent. It is often believed that the males have the larger spurs, and that is how to determine there sex, but this false. The best way to sex a snake is to probe it, by inserting a small probe into the cloaca. Females measuring to about 2-4 subcaudal scales, and males about 8-10 subcaudal scales. The Normal color mutation (Dominant) has a black color and brown blotches going up the whole snake. The ventral (stomach) scales are usually a white or a cream color.
Care (as a pet)-
Enclosure-The best habitat to keep a ball python in is a glass aquarium. A baby or a juvenile, will need to be kept in a 10-15 gallon tank. A Subadult (2-3 ft) ball python should be kept in a 20 gallon tank. A Adult (4+ ft) will need to be kept in 30 gallon tank. But if you are looking to breed ball pythons than a more common solution is a rack system.
Heat-Their should be a cool side and a warm side to the cage. With the cool side being around 77-80 degrees and the warm side around 85-90. Although if the cage is to small, it will be very hard to get proper heating for the snake. Make sure to have a thermometer at each end of the cage to assure the temperatures are accurate.
Bedding-Many people use mulch, aspen, or any other bedding at a pet store. Newspaper and even paper towels are acceptable as well. DO NOT use anything with cedar in it. Cedar is toxic to almost every species of snake.
Hiding-Many Ball Pythons (and other snakes) love to hide in dark places. Almost any hide will work. You should have at least to two hideouts in each enclosure. You can ever cut up a cardboard box and set it in the cage, as long as it is dark. If there is no hide boxes or anything for the snake to hide in, it may become stressed and it will even fast for up to 1-3 months.
Lighting-No special lighting is necessary.
Water-The most important thing is to make sure your snake has fresh water always. A medium sized water will do just fine. Change the water every 1-2 days or if the water is dirty. If you wait over 3 days, bacteria could build up and if the snake if drinking the water it could create diseases.
Humidity-The Humidity level needs to be around 55%-65%. The Humidity should not drop below 45%. Use a hygrometer to tell the humidity level.
